Rev. James Guthrie Boydston, a son of Jessie Guthrie Boydston and the former Miss Ursula Miles, was born in Neshoba County, near Philadelphia, Mississippi. He was educated in Cumberland University in Lebanon Tennessee, studying both literature and theology. James also received a Doctor of Divinity degree there.

During the Civil War, he served in Co. H, 7th Tennessee Infantry Regiment with the Army of Northern Virginia under Gen. Robert E. Lee. At the close of the war, James married Miss Martha Vernetta Fincher, daughter of Rev. Francis Fincher. There were seven known children born to this union:

Rev. Boydston was a pioneer minister with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was also a school teacher. After Martha died in 1881, Rev. Boydston married Mrs. Harriet Young Tate, a widow with one son.

In the early 1900's, they moved to Fort Meyers, Florida; where Rev. Boydston was pastor of the Presbyterian Church.

Rev. James Guthrie Boydston departed this life on October 29th 1912 in the 80th year of his age.
