RICHMOND, VA -- Helen DeLong Brand, 108, died Sunday, March 12, 2006, in Richmond, Va.
Born in Reading, PA, in 1898, she later married Alonzo Brand, MD. (1897-1963) and traveled extensively, living in PA, NY, TX, CA, Bangkok, Thailand, OK, FL, and VA.
Helen attended Syracuse University, was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority and Marshal of her graduating Class of 1919.
She left a record of achievements, such as Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Eta Pi Upsilon, Pi Mu Epsilon, Secretary of the Sophomore Class, Secretary Treasurer of the Syracuse YMCA, Track Representative Basketball, Letter, Dolphin "S" and Mercury "S." She also was Alpha Xi Delta Eta Chapter Treasurer for two years, Journal Correspondent for the Syracuse Alumnae and Chairman of the Finance Committee when Alpha Xi Delta built its new house.
She drove in the Motor Corps (Fort Sam Houston, TX 1942-1945) and, after retiring to Fort Myers Beach, FL (1960) started a new D.A.R. chapter there.
Helen is survived by three daughters, Marilynn B. Gould of Richmond, VA, Sylvia B. Cunningham and Dorothy B. Lore, both of Durham, NC; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned at 1000 Islands, NY, where she was a summer resident since 1933.
