Police said Evans was found in the basement of the family home five miles southeast of Warsaw on the Packerton Rd. at 6 p.m. Sunday by his wife. Authorities said the wound in the head was self-inflicted from a .22 caliber rifle. He was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital in critical condition and later transferred to the Fort Wayne hospital where he died the following day.
Investigating was County Police Patrolman Jeffrey Bronsing along with county Coroner Kenneth Wyman.
Born in Warsaw on April 15, 1928, he was the son of Samuel Leroy and Lizzie Ellen (Foreman) Evans. A life resident of Kosciusko County, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Baughter in Warsaw on Jan. 29, 1949.
A livestock dealer, he was a member of the Pleasant Grove Church.
Surviving are the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Lewis (Terri) Collier, Shelbyville, and Tracy Evans, at home; one son, Randy Evans, at home; two grandchildren; two brothers, Earl Evans, Rt. 3, Warsaw, and Ralph Evans, Rt. 2, Warsaw; six sisters, Mrs. Gene (Mae) Beigh, Mrs. Ruby Drane, Mrs. Wilbur (Julia) Morts, Mrs. Thelma Boyer and Mrs. Fred (Lillian) Lozier, all of Warsaw and Mrs. Jack (Mary Beth) Camden, Pierceton. One brother preceded him in death.
Services will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. in the McHatton-Wadler Funeral Home with the Rev. John Bellante and the Rev. John Martin officiating. Interment will be in the Pleasant Grove cemetery.
Friends will be received in the funeral home from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m.
