Carl A. Anderson Jr., Ret. Col. U.S. Army National Guard, 88, of Athens, died Friday, May 15, 2009, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native Polk County, and a lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Carl A. Anderson Sr. and Nelle Ogle Anderson. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Zelda Rose "Toby" Stephenson Anderson, on July 18, 1998; one son, C.A. Anderson III; and one sister, Nelle Stafford. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and was a retired representative for Shaw-Barton Calender and Specialty Advertising. He served 38 years in the U.S. Army National Guard, having retired as a colonel, and was a former P.O.W. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his wife, Polly Brooks Anderson of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, Fred R. and Gladys Anderson of Maryville; one daughter, Janet R. Little of Cookeville; three stepsons and spouses, Pete and Trish Tallant of Smithville, the Rev. Alvin and Sandy Tallant of Kingston, and John Tallant of Cumming, Ga.; one stepdaughter and spouse, Gielda and Tom Reese of Decatur; three grandchildren and two spouses, Jacqueline and Todd Ratermann, Rebecca Tucker and Kimberly and Allen Morris; several step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, Haley Morris, Hannah Morris, Catherine Ratermann, Chloe Ratermann, Julianna Tucker and Kayla Tucker; one brother, George Anderson of Cleveland; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Virginia Johnson of Newark, Del., and Betty Jean and Robert Winchester of Upper Arlington, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were 8 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Miller officiating. Burial was 1 p.m. Monday in Cedar Grove Cemetery with full military honors. Active pallbearers were members of the military.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
