Sylvain Eugène Raynal was born on March 3, 1867 in Bordeaux from a family of craftsmen.
After schooling at the high school of Angoulême (Charente), he joined the military school of Saint-Maixent (Deux-Sè-vres). Upon his release, he was incorporated into the 7th regiment of riflemen of Constantine and discovered Algeria. From 1902 to 1913, he was posted to Paris where he served under Guillaumat.
Fervent patriot, he defends all the same the action of Jaurès concerning the non-start of the First World War. He was again assigned to Constantine where he learned of France's entry into the war in the summer of 1914.
Wounded in September 1914 during the Battle of the Marne.
