John Pinkney Abernathy was the eldest child of Alexander Adam Abernathy and his wife Rhoda Ellen Cline. His siblings were Lee Alexander, Gertrude Jane Holdsclaw, James Merkison, Nancy Catherine Bradley, Lura Augusta Everhart, Lucy Ellen, Buna Iola Brinkley and George W Abernathy.

On Nov 24, 1901 in Catawba County he became the husband of Dora Elizabeth Drum, daughter of Perry Davidson Drum and his wife Mary Ellen Summit. This union was blessed with Charlie Clarence, Bertha Ellen Setzer, and Vagie Mae Abernathy.
