Curtis Owen Peterson, 85, a resident of Anam Care Center in Rockford, Ill., formerly of Freeport, Ill., died Monday, May 4, 2009, at Anam.
Mr. Peterson was born Dec. 20, 1923, in Eau Claire, the son of H. George and Hannah (Amundson) Peterson. Mr. Peterson was a World War II Navy veteran. He served in the Pacific Theater as a surgical tech aboard the USS Marvin H. McIntyre. He was a 1948 graduate of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. On Feb. 14, 1953, Curtis married Charlotte Norby in Los Angeles. Mr. Peterson owned and operated a Ford dealership in Strum from 1948 to 1956. He then started a longtime work career with AandW Restaurants. From 1957 to 1962, he owned and operated an AandW Restaurant in Wabash, Ind. In 1962, he moved to Freeport and owned and operated the AandW Restaurant in Freeport until 1989. Mr. Peterson was vice president on the National Advisory Council for A&W Restaurants.
Mr. Peterson was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Golden K, Kiwanis Club, AMVETS, Wisconsin Masonic Lodge 10213, Freeport Scottish Rite for 58 years, Freeport High Twelve Club and Tebala Shrine Club. Curt enjoyed fishing, taking trips to Canada and Alaska. Curt and his family especially enjoyed spending time at their condominium in Palm Springs, Calif.
Mr. Peterson is survived by two sons, Jeffrey George Peterson of Franklin Park, Ill., and James Owen (Jane) Peterson of Forsyth, Ill.; a grandson, Jared (Kristine) Gambrill of Niantic, Ill.; four great-grandchildren, Spencer, Travis, Jackson and Josie; a sister-in-law; and a niece and a nephew.
Mr. Peterson was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Horace; and a son, Gregg, DDS, who died in 1999.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Schiefelbein Funeral Home, Osseo.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 8, at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home, 504 N. Walnut Ave., Freeport, Ill., 815-233-0613. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran Church cemetery, Strum.
