CLARINDA, Iowa — Newlin Dean Huddle, 95, was born Aug. 31, 1913, in Burlington Junction, Mo., the youngest son of William Leonard and Maude Elzora (Miller) Huddle. He passed away April 26, at the Eiler House in Clarinda, Iowa.

Dean grew up in Shambaugh, Iowa, with two older brothers, Ural and Leland. Dean's father was killed by his hired hand when Dean was only 9 months old.

Dean and Perna eloped to Rockport, Mo., and were married by a justice of the peace on a very cold evening Oct. 24, 1936. After marrying, they lived in Shambaugh, Iowa, with Dean's mother for a while, eventually moving to Shenandoah, Iowa. They had started their married life together with $27 between them.

They raised four children Larry, Linda, Steve and Patricia. Together, they enjoyed their 11 grandchildren, and by 2009 had 12 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

During the Great Depression Dean was unemployed and spent his days playing croquet and pitching horseshoes — for both of which he had a natural talent. When he moved his family into Clarinda, Iowa, he joined a bowling league and over the years proudly accepted many trophies for individual and team efforts. One of his favorite memories is the night he bowled a "299" — 10 strikes and a split of which he picked up one more pin.

In his pre-teen years he helped farmers milk their dairy cows to earn extra money for the family. Early into the Great Depression, Dean worked at the Civilian Conservation Corps camp in Clarinda. Dean left there to work in the coal mines. He later took a job with the Barron Oil station, providing "full service" to customers, including the Lake brothers who took a liking to him. The Lake brothers asked Dean to come to work for them at Lake's Nursery in Shenandoah. In 1944-1950 they moved to Grandpa Holmes's farm south of Shenandoah to farm the land. From 1950 - 1953 they lived on Amelia Miller's farm south of Clarinda, moving to Eldon Fidler's place 1953 -1959. In February of 1959 the family moved into Clarinda and Dean worked as an appliance serviceman with Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. He was employed by the company for 19 years and retired in 1979.

Dean enjoyed reflecting on the happy memories of all the holidays, weddings and special events that occurred over the years with Perna and his family and friends.

Dean is survived by his wife Perna Huddle of Clarinda; his children, Larry and Eileen Huddle of Loveland, Colo., Linda and Kirk Hascall of Emerson, Iowa, Steve and Peggy Huddle of Clarinda, Iowa, and Pat and Jeff Schneweis of Claflin; 11 grandchildren; Kali Hascall of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Craig and Kathy Hascall of Erie, Colo., Chad Hascall of Lafayette, Colo., Clint and Patti Hascall of Essex, Iowa, Helmut and Karla Taschner of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Todd and Stacy Huddle of Colorado Springs, Colo., Tom and Stephanie Vitt of Big Lake, Alaska, Tony and Jodie Huegerich of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jason and Sally Huddle of Ankeny, Iowa, Bob and Samantha Neill of Buhler, and Ben South of McPherson; 15 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Also a brother-in-law Lysle Nelson of Shenandoah, Iowa, and sister in-law Naomi Worl of Hamburg, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Maude Huddle; and brothers Ural and wife Kathryn Huddle and Leland and wife Frances Huddle.

Funeral services were held at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, on Friday at 11 a.m. with interment at the Clarinda Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in Clarinda, Iowa, and to the American Heart Association through the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home.
