Maryann Avino-Matunas, 68, of Toms River, and Port St. Lucie, Fla., passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Community Medical Center, Toms River. Born in Brooklyn, she lived in Manalapan before moving to Toms River six years ago. She was a former communicant of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Manalapan and a current and active member of Grace Peace Church, Toms River. Maryann was employed by the College of Staten Island in New York for many years before becoming the vice president of District Council 37 in Manhattan, where she retired in 2003.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Frank Avino Jr., in 1999. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Matunas; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joanne and Michael Palladino of Howell, and Christina and Bimal Kulasekara of Staten Island, N.Y.; her sister, Angela Ricci of Beverly Hills, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Brianna and Gina Palladino.
Friends are invited to visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 3 at the Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, 344 Route 9 North, Manalapan. A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, May 4 at St. Thomas More Church, Manalapan. Interment will follow at Old Tennent Cemetery, Manalapan. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 281 Highway 79, Suite 14, Morganville, NJ 07731.
