The son of Matthew Gault and Catharine Elizabeth (nee Mull) Henderson. In 1850 he was residing with his family in Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. By 1860, he was a laborer and sawyer living with and working for the Cyrus J. Weaver farming family in East Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, but is listed in his 1863 draft registration as a farmer living in Bart Township, Lancaster County. He stood 5' 8" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War Union soldier, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty in Reading, Berks County, June 4, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Camp McCall in Washington, DC, July 28 as a Private with Company D, 3rd Pennsylvania Reserves (32nd Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry). Promoted to Corporal, January 1, 1863. He mustered out with his company and was honorably discharged at term's end, June 17, 1864.

He married Louisa Richardson and fathered Harry L. (b. 1879), Florence (b. 11/08/81, married Harry C. Williams), Howard L. (b. 05/19/85), and Lulu (b. 09/??/89). By 1880 was a resident of Pottsville, Schuylkill County, where he worked as a railroad watchman but later moved to Philadelphia where his occupation was machinist. He had been a member of Philadelphia's Anna Ross Post No. 94, G.A.R.

All censuses suggest a birth year ca. 1842, which agrees with his stated age at enlistment, except that the 1900 census claims February 1844.
