— Services for Janet Lee Knapp will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 28, 2009, in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service. She will be laid to rest at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery at 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Monday from 2 to 8 p.m. Janet passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2009. She was 75.
Born in Passaic, N.J. on May 16, 1933, to Frederick and Helen (Hacker) Metzger, Janet was reared and educated in Passaic. She graduated from Rutherford High School and attended the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. On June 26, 1954, Janet and Lyle Hollerin Knapp married in Hackensack, N.J. and made their home in Niagara Falls. Four children joined their family. As a result of Lyle's employment with American Airlines, many communities from coast to coast, including Long Island, Brentwood, Simi Valley, Tulsa, El Cajon and even Hawaii were home to the Knapp family through the years. Janet's ability to make a home wherever she was planted enabled the family to feel comfortable and part of each community they lived in. When Lyle retired they returned to northeastern Oklahoma and settled in Claremore.
With four young children at home, Janet was busy with their care; however, she was able to find time to volunteer with PTA, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Little League. Hobbies included arts and crafts, gardening, and travel. She took advantage of every opportunity to enjoy the outdoors with her beloved family, camping, boating or swimming.
Loving and beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Janet's survivors include her husband Lyle Knapp of their home in Claremore; children Robert William Knapp, Laguna Niguel, Calif., Debra Ann Pederson, El Cajon, Calif., Susan Louise Ramsey and husband Jim, of Tulsa, and James Lyle Knapp, Sr. and wife, Julie Ann, Claremore; grandchildren Jamie Engleman and Brian, Escondido, Calif., Sarah Elizabeth Eva Knapp, Coronado, Calif., Jessica Kathleen Knapp, San Diego, Calif., Ashley Nicole Pederson, El Cajon, Calif., and James Lyle Knapp, Jr., Claremore; great grandchildren, Bryan Matthew Engleman, Gary Rodger Engleman, Kaitelyn Dorothy Engleman and Skylar Madison Potter; and sister Carolyn Ruth Asbury of San Francisco, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Audrey Ann Winzurk.
Memorial contributions in Janet's name may be made to Seasons Hospice, 6532 E. 71st Street, Suite 101, Tulsa, OK 74133.
