On 18 November 1928, Elmer married Bessie Devine Nixon in Marshall County, Alabama. Until his retirement, they farmed at High Point. After Elmer retired, they moved to Albertville where he did woodworking in his garage on Section Line Road.
Elmer was a devout Christian and humble man and a member of High Point Missionary Baptist Church.
Elmer died on 10 February 1991, in Huntsville, Madison, Alabama,at the age of 79. Preceded in death by his wife, Elmer was survived by his children: Evelyn Christine, Betty Jo, and Edward Hewett.
