Born to Swedish immigrants in Huron, SD, in 1928, John was a gifted athlete who excelled in basketball, football and track. He was recruited by several colleges and was also invited to try out for the Philadelphia Eagles. But a strong desire to be with his two older brothers upon their return from the war kept him in South Dakota.
A 1950 graduate of Huron College, he coached and taught high school in Wolsey before enlisting in the Air Force and eventually being sent to Germany. After serving his country for four years he joined his family's construction business in Huron. John and Jeanne relocated to Missouri in the early 1980s and then later retired to Arizona, where they have resided in Scottsdale for more than a decade.
Whether taking part in a Pinewood Derby with his son, attending a father-daughter dinner, counting offering after church, supervising a work crew or serving as president of the Associated General Contractors of South Dakota, John enjoyed himself and acted with fairness, integrity and a sense of commitment.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edith and Gust Jacobson; his brothers, Hank and Jim Jacobson; his daughter, Jan (Dave) McLinn; and cherished dogs, including his beloved beagle, Sandy, in March of this year.
A memorial service will be held at North Scottsdale United Methodist Church Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to the Friends of Animal Care & Control (P.O. Box 80739, Phoenix, AZ 85060-0739), Sojourn Care Hospice (7975 N. Hayden Rd., Suite A-205, Scottsdale, AZ 85258), or Hospice of Arizona's Butterfly Unit at Pueblo Norte (7100 E. Mescal St., Scottsdale, AZ 85254).
