He was born July 10, 1918, in Burnett to George and Millie Brown Erdle as the sixth of 10 children. On Dec. 2, 1942, he married Golden Modesitt of Seelyville, and she survives. Joe served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Valparaiso from 1936 to 1939. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on April 12, 1941, and served as PFC in the Medical Corps of the 38th Infantry division. He saw combat action in the Pacific Theater, including New Guinea and the Philippines in World War II. He was discharged on Oct. 4, 1945. He was one of five brothers to serve in the armed forces during World War II.
Upon his return from military service, he resided in Seelyville until moving to his present residence in Terre Haute in 1969. He worked at a number of businesses in Terre Haute, including Terre Haute Tie Plant, Terre Haute Ordinance, Tumpane, Harvey Aluminum, Stran Steel, Smith Hardware, Woolco and Millers Floral Shop. He also worked at Arkitex in Brazil. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He proudly flew the flag at his residence each day.
In addition to his beloved wife Golden, he is survived by two sons, Larry Erdle of Riverton, Ill., and Ken Erdle and his wife Nancy of Bloomington; six grandchildren and their spouses, Lori and Roger Goben of Iowa, Lisa and Sean Mullins of Illinois, Sara and Tim Robinson of Texas, Emily and Russell Mendenhall of Illinois, Jeff and Christa Erdle of North Carolina, and Conrad Erdle of Illinois; six great-grandchildren, Matthew Goben, Jenni Goben, Russell Mendenhall Jr., Remi Mendenhall, Isabel Robinson and Keegan Mullins; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by seven brothers, John of Muncie, Albert of Terre Haute, Lester of Lima, Ohio, George Jr. of Muncie, Orville of Muncie, James of Bedford and Wayne of Brazil; and two sisters, Mary Ross of Muncie, and Ethel Jean, who died in infancy.
Services are 1 p.m. Monday at Callahan Funeral Home with the Rev. Dewayne Brown officiating. Friends may call between 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday. Burial is in Highland Lawn Cemetery.
