Signe M. (Boala) Costin of Denton, 98, a former Havre resident passed away early Saturday morning, Jan. 10, 2009, in the Central Montana Medical Center in Lewistown surrounded by her family.
She was born Oct. 13, 1910, in Merino, Mont., daughter of Finnish immigrants Herman and Fredriika Boala. She graduated from Great Falls High in 1931 and then began working as a cook in Hinsdale at a hotel. In 1937 she was united in marriage to Louis L. Costin and they lived on a farm. They later moved to Poplar, Culbertson, Wolf Point and in 1958 moved to Havre with Louis job with Farmers Union. In Havre, Signe worked in the community as a caregiver for the elderly needing help in their own homes. After Louis' death in 1973 she continued to live in Havre until 2000, when she moved to Denton to be closer to her daughter.
Signe loved to crochet and make afghans and quilts for her family and friends. She also enjoyed gardening and had special recipes for making beet pickles and hot dill pickles. She will be remembered by her family for her strong Christian faith. She was a member of Van Orsdel United Methodist Church of Havre.
She is survived by two sons, Norman (Janet) and Ray (Kristin), both of Billings; daughter, Betty (Ron) Brinkman of Coffee Creek; and daughter-in-law Yvonne (Theron, deceased) Costin of Aurora, Colo.; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, in 1973; her son Theron on Jan. 5, 2009; a granddaughter, Andrea, in 1996; a grandson, Spenser, in 2002; one brother, one sister, two half sisters and her parents.
