A memorial service for Bryan K. Zollner was held Thursday, April 19, 2007, at 11 am at Big League Dreams Sports Park, 20155 Viking Way in Redding. Bryan, 44, died in a vehicle accident in Lassen County on April 12, 2007.

Bryan was born Aug. 7, 1962, in Oroville, Calif. to Bob and Brenda Zollner. He attended area elementary schools, Central Middle School, and graduated from Las Plumas High School in 1980.

Zollner's notable career with the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, CAL FIRE, culminated at the rank of Northern Region Staff Chief of Operations. He began his careeras a Paid-Call Firefighter in the Butte Unit while attending Butte Community College. In 1981 he was hired as a Seasonal Firefighter by the Butte Unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, then known as CDF. He worked one year for the Oroville Fire Department as a Fire Protection Operator before returning to CAL FIRE as a limited term Firefighter 11 in the Fresno-Kings Unit.

In 1985, Zollner returned to the Butte Unit as a limited term Fire Apparatus Engineer in the Chico Battalion. For one year he worked for the Yuba City Fire Department. He returned to CAL FIRE in 1986 as a permanent Firefighter 11 in the Santa Clara Unit, received a quick promotion to Fire Apparatus Engineer and went to work at the Ramona Air Attack Base in San Diego. He was promoted three years later to Fire Captain and worked in this position at both the Bautista Conservation Camp in the Riverside Unit and the Alder Conservation Camp in the Humboldt-Del Norte Unit. Zollner worked in the Riverside Unit in various locations and positions including Battalion Chief and Chief of the Norco Conservation Camp.

In 2001. Zollner accepted the position of Deputy Chief with the public education office for CAL FIRE in Sacramento. In 2002 he transferred to Northern Region as Deputy Chief for Conservation Camp coordination and CAL FIRE'S Northern Region Operations. In 2005 he was named Assistant Chief Operations in the Tehama-Glenn Unit. In 2006 he returned to Northern Region as Staff Chief for operations. Additionally, he worked on numerous Incident Command Teams as an Operations Section Chief, Plans Section Chief and Incident Commander.

Chief Zollner was a sworn peace officer for CAL FIRE and received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the State of California Gold Medal of Valor in 1998 for an off-duty rescue of a child from a burning structure in Riverside. His other commendations include the CAL FIRE Director's Superior Accomplishment Award, California Governor's Clarity Award, and Firehouse Magazine Medal of Valor. Zollner was also Salutatorian of CAL FIRE Basic Fire Control Class #98 and Valedictorian of CAL FIRE P.O.S.T. Class #44.

Zollner was involved in numerous organizations in the fire community including the California Fire Chiefs Association, CDF Firefighters, and California Professional Firefighters Association. He was a member of Kiwanis International, the Tehama County Peace Officers Association, and served on many community advisory boards and councils.

Bryan was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting waterfowl, hiking, and fishing trips with friends and family. He actively participated in an adult fast-pitch baseball league and was an enthusiastic golfer.

Like so many of his brothers and sisters, Bryan K. Zollner came from a firefighting family. His grandfather was a Detroit firefighter, while his father served as chief of the Oroville Fire Department. Bryan carried the tradition forward nobly, serving a variety of functions within what was then the California Department of Forestry abd Fire Protection. in 1998, Bryan's devotion to duty was recognized with a Medal of Valor ehrn he broke through the back window of a home and, without breathing apparatus, rescued a small child from a burning home.
