US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1860 and commenced the practice of law in Brownstown, Indiana. From 1862 to 1866, he was a member of State house of Representatives and served in the State Senate in 1870. He was Secretary of the Territory of Wyoming, 1873 to 1875 and again a member of the Indiana State Senate, 1880 to 1883. In 1889, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-first, Fifty-second and Fifty-third Congresses, serving until 1895. An unsuccessful candidate for renomination, he resumed leagal practice until his death.
