Mr. John Parks Helms passed away on April 14th, 2009 at St Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m Thursday the 23rd of April in the Family Life Center of Euto Baptist Church, New Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., also in the Family Life Center of Euto Baptist Church.

John Parks was the son of the late Randolf S. and Lily Virgie Stegall Helms and was raised in the Fairfield Community.

He is survived by his daughter, Angela Pearl Helms of Edwards, Colo.

Mr. Helms was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters: Velma H. Polk Pickard, Thelma H. Medlin, T.B. Helms, Virginia N. Sanders, Melvin Helms, and Harry Lee Helms.

John Parks met his wife of 54 years, JoAnne Huneycutt, through an introduction by his niece, Elaine Medlin High. They were married in New Salem Presbyterian Church on June 26, 1954 on a day that John Parks always commented was the hottest day of the year.

Parks took great pride in operating and expanding the family farm in New Salem. He was a banker during the day, and a cattle farmer in the evening.

J. Parks graduated from Fairfield High School and was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1954 and was stationed at Ft. Riley, Kans. John Parks was discharged from the Army the same day that JoAnne graduated from Kansas State Univ. and they returned to Union County to continue their lives.

J. Parks was employed in accounting in the Armour Turkey Plant in Marshville. He began his banking career in 1961 at Mutual Bank and Trust in Marshville. Upon the merger in 1969 with Security Bank and Trust he was promoted to vice president. He was then promoted to senior vice president in 1971. In 1974 he was appointed regional supervisor of Security Bank and Trust branches in Union and Anson counties and then later was promoted to area executive of the Stanly County branches and made his home office in the Oakboro branch of Security Bank and Trust. J. Parks also served as an operations consultant working in many of the branches in the state.

J. Parks retired in 1995 after 33 years of service to the citizens of Union, Anson, and Stanly counties.J. Parks also devoted his life to civic duties and served as chairman of the N.C. State Board of Education, chairman of the Union County Board of Education, president of the Union County Cancer Society, president of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, president of the Marshville Chamber of Commerce, president of the Marshville Lions Club, and president of the Monroe Lions Club. He was also a member of the Woodmen of the World, president of the Marshville Board of Trade and a member of the Rotary Club in each of the counties that he worked. He was vital in the development of U.S. Highway 74 and took part in the dedication ceremonies with Governor Bob Scott. Parks received many awards for his service to this area. He was named Marshville Man of the Year as well as Union County Man of the Year.

Upon his retirement he closed the vault of banking and opened the door of a life of travelling beginning with a six week trek across Alaska. Their travels led them to every state in the US as well as many countries in Europe. Parks also had more time to devote to his farm and volunteered on many farming and forestry committee's as well as being a member of the Cattlemen's Club.

Parks was active at Euto Baptist Church where he served as the Building Fund Treasurer and served on the Long Range Planning Committee. With his wife, JoAnne, he coordinated the Senior Adult Ministry of Euto Baptist Church. He also served as chairman of the deacons, Sunday School superintendent and treasurer at Fairfield Baptist Church in his earlier years.

He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Helms Rossiter, and many nieces and nephews: Wayne Polk, Leander Medlin, Linda Medlin Helms, Barbara Medlin Price, Freddie Helms Walters, Boyd Helms, Peggy Nash Wiggins, Janet Nash Horne, Wanda Sanders Dickinson, Aretha James Mitchum and Barbara Helms Robinson and their families.
