Funeral services for James Cecil Moore, 85, are set for 11 a.m., Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the Corinth Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Abraham Walton and Rev. Alex Holloway. Burial will be in Clearview Cemetery.


James Cecil Moore was born Nov. 28, 1923, to the parentage of Ernest and Johnnetta (Crane) Moore in Ardmore, Okla. He departed this life Thursday, April 16, 2009, after a lengthy illness. His parents and brothers, Ernest, Arillus, John Lindon and infant son, Ernest, preceded him in death.


James attended Ardmore Public Schools beginning at Dunbar Elementary and graduating from Douglass High in 1942 where he excelled in the classroom and athletic field. After graduation he entered the United States Army, Jan. 29, 1943. During World War II, he was in the battles of Normandy and Northern France. He was awarded the European-African Mediterranean Theater Ribbon, two Bronze Service Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Ribbon.

He served his country proudly and was honorably discharged with the rank of S/Sgt in June of 1946.
James' education path after military service took him to Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. He received a degree in English and was an Omega Psi Phi fraternity member and outstanding football star. He and Dorothy Mae Henderson married Jan. 25, 1952 at Ardmore and together they raised six children. He was a lifetime and faithful member of the Metropolitan AME Church where he served as trustee and usher until his health failed.


He leaves to cherish and honor his memory and rich legacy his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Dorothy; five sons, James C. Brown, San Antonio, Texas, John Moore and his wife, Joann, Gary Moore and his wife, Carmen, Raymond Moore and his wife, Linda, Walter Moore and his wife, Crystal; a daughter, Bernice White; and his sister, Electra Baker, all of Ardmore; adopted sons, Abraham Walton, Lawton, Okla. and Warren Blackmon, Greenville, S.C.; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, cousins, other relatives and friends that he considered family.


Bearers will be Zeno Scott, John Bryant, Archie Patton, Henry Graham, Will McCarroll and Curtis Hamilton. Honorary bearers will be Charles Cox, Frank Luster, James Nash, Monroe Cosey, Zelto Anderson, Raymond Wilson, Harold Douglass and Wendall Hall.
