Aunt Frances lived to be 94--she lived a life rich in family and friends and lived her life well, the last twenty years as the sole Shuster family matriarch.

She was born, the daughter of Daniel and Nancy Belle (McCarthy) Shuster on August 24, 1907, in a little log cabin on Chipman Road in Rush Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. She graduated from Owosso Business College on June 24, 1924.

She married Nelson Hygema on October 7, 1925; together, they built a family, owned their farm on Six Mile Creek Road in Henderson and the Shuster homestead (which became the Shuster Centennial Farm during their tenure), square danced, spent 25 consecutive winters in Florida, and was very involved in her immediate and extended families.

She worked at Robbins Furniture Company for fourteen years followed by employment at Owosso Federal Savings & Loan and JC Penneys for a short time. In addition, she was affiliated with the Henderson United Methodist Church and a long-time member of the Rush Center Get Together Club and various Cooperative Extension Service Programs.

She will always be remembered as the keeper of the family genealogy. In a time before computers, while visiting Aunt Frances with a new child, she would roll out this long chart hand-written on a roll of freezer paper . . . our legacy . . . and enter the child's name in the appropriate space. She would recount where that child was in the genealogy and talk about some of the people who came before us. My children and grandchildren were all entered into the records of time in this manner. It was a time-honored tradition.

She lived and knew the history of Rush Township--she could recount the local stories well into her 90's. She attended almost all family functions, hosting many of them. She was someone we will all remember affectionately as "Aunt Frances."

Mrs. Hygema was survived by two daughters, four grandchildren, two great granddaughters, and a foster great grandchild, as well as many nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Nelson; son, James; and brother, Carroll (Carl) Shuster.

Services were held through Nelson-House Funeral Home, Owosso, Michigan.
