John Wilson and his brother, Thomas, both enlisted in the Confederate Army the same day, and fought in the Civil War. John was wounded in the battle of Corinth, and was left for dead on the battlefield. He was captured the next day by the Union soldiers and delivered to a Confederate hospital. He was shot in the leg and the mini-ball could not be removed. He walked with a limp for the rest of his life.

A Historical Memorial Marker honoring John William Wilson was erected in front of their house October 5, 1969 1 & 1/2 miles east of Lake Creek, Texas, Delta County on F.M. 198. The old house is now gone, but the marker still stands.
