Myrtle Aniece Goodwin, known as "Auntie Myrt" as she was affectionately known, was born on May 7, 1919 in Greensboro, North Carolina to Annie Lawson and Joseph Gillis. On January 15, 2005, after a brief illness, Myrtle went to be with the Lord.
At an early age Myrtle moved to West Philadelphia, where she completed her education. Myrtle married John Henry Goodwin and moved to Trevose, Pennsylvania, where they lovingly raised their daughter, Donna Goodwin. Myrtle enjoyed a career in retail, working for Sears and Roebuck and retiring from Strawbridge and Clothier.
She had a very special place in her heart for children. She nurtured and cared for many as her own. Myrtle was known throughout the community for her generous hospitality. Throughout her life she opened her home to many for meals, residency, refuge, and as a fun comfortable place to "hangout".
Above all, Myrtle loved the Lord. She was a founding member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church where she attended Sunday school and Worship service faithfully until her death. While attending St. Matthew, Myrtle taught Sunday school, served as an officer and member of the United Methodist Women, sang with the Senior Choir and Spiritual Voices Choir, and participated in the Circle of Love Ministry.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband John Henry and daughter, Donna Marie. She leaves to cherish her memory one granddaughter, Johanna; one grandson, Aquil; a great-grandson, Aquil Jr; a brother, Irving Gillis and nieces and nephews. In addition, she leaves behind a dedicated church family, a caring extended family and a host of loved ones and friends.
