Although born in the U.S. he was raised speaking Polish. His family called him "Werlie" when he was little. In his early years the family moved a few times before in the mid-1920s they settled at 348 Lafayette St. where Walter was primarily raised.
In 1925 Walter's mother passed away at 40 years old when Walter was 12 years old. His father left with six children quickly remarried six months after Helena's death so his children would have a "mother." Walter step mother, Jozafa Izbicka, raised Walter mostly after his own mother's death.
By 1930 Walter was working for an electric company but was later was hired by Worthington Pump Co. in Harrison, NJ where his father and brother Joe worked and his brother Stanley later worked. Walter worked at Worthington many years and was later a foreman.
In 1937 me married Jadwiga Pawlikowski. Together they had four children, Jean, Richie, Dorothy, and Carol. They lived in Newark before moving to 16 Roosevelt Terr in Irvington, NJ. They raised their children here.
At their home on Roosevelt Terr. Walter & Jadwiga always entertained family and friends alike. He also kept a large vegetable garden in the backyard.
Walter was always stern faced but loving. He welcomed twin granddaughters in 1960 and another granddaughter in 1964 (daughters of Jean) who lived with him and Jadwiga on Roosevelt Terr. in Irvington. When they moved to Union 1965 Walter was terribly upset. He said to his daughter crying "You and Ronnie move, but leave the girls [his granddaughters]." Walter was always the "threat" meaning "don't make me take you to grandpa's house." He hund a belt on the wall but never used it.
Walter suddenly suffered a heart attack on January 5, 1968 while sitting in his chair at the kitchen table. The priest from Sacred Heart Church ran down the street to give him his last rights. He later passed away at Irvington General Hospital. He was 55. He is deeply missed.
