Donald Joseph (Joe) Bremer, 55, of Council Grove, KS, passed away Friday, April 3, 2009, at Morris County Hospital in Council Grove.

Joe was born February 26, 1954 in Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado, to Donald Ray and Betty Lou Buehler Bremer, and was welcomed home by a big sister, Judith Rae Bremer. He grew up in Colby, KS, where he attended Colby Grade School and was graduated from Colby High School with the class of 1972.

During his senior year in high school Joe joined the Kansas Army National Guard. Following High School Graduation, he went to Fort Dix, NJ for basic training then to Fort Lee, VA for AIT. He served eight years in the guard.

Joe held many different jobs before going to college in 1982 at Kansas City Kansas Community College. He graduated with an Associates Degree in Mortuary Science in 1984. He also received the Directors Award from the Mortuary Science department in 1984. He became licensed as an embalmer and funeral director in 1985. He had worked at the Flanigan-Hunt Mortuary and at Lakeview Funeral Home in Wichita, before moving to Topeka in 1988 to work at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. In August of 1990, he was transferred to Council Grove, where he became Manager of the Kendall Funeral Chapel, and held that position until May 2001. In September of 2001, he was named manager of Memorial Chapel of the Flint Hills in Council Grove, which later became Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home & Crematory, Flint Hills Chapel.

He was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Frederick Phillips American Legion Post #121, where he was the Chaplain for several years, Knights of Columbus, and the Council Grove Lions Club, where he was a past president. He was a member of the Leadership Morris County Class of 1993, then served on the board of directors for 2 years and was president in his 2nd year. He was very active in the Babe Ruth baseball program, serving as treasurer for the Babe Ruth Ball Association for several years, helped with numerous tournaments and announced many games.

Joe loved being with his children and all the activities they were involved in. This is what led him to being so involved in the Babe Ruth program, filming High School Football, Judging Weightlifting Meets and announcing High School Baseball. In 2004, he was awarded the Friend of Education Award for his time he gave to the school, an award he was very proud of.

He was married to Jolene Marie Ribordy on May 11, 1974, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Oakley, KS. They had four children; D.J. Bremer, Jr., Shad Mathew Bremer, Derek James Bremer and Katarina Ann Bremer.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Kenny Russell.

Survivors include; wife, Jolene and daughter, Katarina, of the home, D.J. and wife Amanda, of Council Grove, Shad and fiance Kelcy Johnson, of Junction City, and Derek, of Emporia; sister Judy Russell and husband Joe Brockman, grandchildren, Kelsey & Laynee Bremer, and step-grandson, Logan Litke; Father- in-law and mother-in-law, Joe and Rita Ribordy; and in-law's, Bernard and Marcia Ribordy, Melvin and Imogene Wildeman, Harold and Judy Menhusen, Gail Ribordy, Dave and Anita Popelka, Phillip and Cindy Ribordy, and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with Father Edmond Kline and Father Joe Popelka officiating. Burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery.

There will be two visitations;
Monday, April 6, 2009, from 12:00 - 8:00 P.M., at the Penwell-Gabel Flint Hills Chapel, in Council Grove, where family will receive friends from 6 - 8:00 P.M.

Tuesday, April 7, 2009, a Rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M., at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with the family receiving friends after the rosary until 8:00 P.M.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Children's or Grandchildren's Education Fund or a Scholarship Fund designated for someone who participates in sports that will be pursuing a teaching/coaching career, and sent in c/o Emprise Bank, PO Box 274, Council Grove, KS, 66846.
