FERRY BOAT'S HEROIC CAPTAIN DIES IN HOSPITAL

The ferryboat captain who collapsed in midstream, but dramatically summoned aid from below deck and saved his passengers, died at 4:50 p.m. Monday in Methodist hospital here.

He was Capt. J. W. Long, Sr, 52, of Baytown, who had been master of the Harris County ferryboat Charles D. Massey, at Morgans Point, for 11 years.

Captain Long, a familiar figure to motorists crossing the Ship Channel between La Port and Baytown, never recovered from a cerebral hemorrhage May 13, as he piloted his loaded ferry across the channel.

Mustering his last strength, he rang the ferry's warning bell three times. Another crew member, Henry Dudley, raced up to the bridge, and took over. The captain's action is credited with avoiding possible disaster to the ferry and occupants.

He had been a resident of Baytown for 25 years.

Survivors include his wife, Nannie Long; three sons, J. W. Long, Jr., and Marvin C. Long, both of Baltimore, Md. and J. D. Long III of Baytown; a daughter, Mrs. O. F. Steele of Baytown; a stepson W. Vinson, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Jimmie Day, both of Baytown; five brothers, Ed Long of Marshall, W. P. Long of Hempstead, Browder Long of Conroe, J. G. Long of Lufkin and Leslie Long of Tomball; a sister, Mrs. Mary Ella Schoverling of Houston, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were scheduled for 3 p.m. today at Central Baptist Church, Baytown, with Rev. John H. Osteen officiating.

Burial will be in Hill of Rest Cemetery, with Cedar Bayou Masonic Lodge No. 321 conducting graveside ceremonies.
