C. Donald Howland was born May 11, 1912, in his parents farm home south of Formoso, Kansas. He was the son of Roy Nathan Howland and Maude (Patterson) Howland. Donald was raised on the farm with brothers Robert, Bruce, Smith and sisters Helen, Mary Jane, Lillian and Eloise. He learned the business of farming at an early age. Donald took over operation of the farm at a young age when his father suddenly passed away and, in fact, spent the remainder of his life operating and living on the same farm. On March 19, 1935, in Mankato, Kansas, Donald married Claretta Grice Fulton of Fairfield, Iowa. It is believed the couple met while Claretta was visiting her aunt who lived in Mankato. The couple began their new marriage living and working on the Howland farm. They never had children, but always enjoyed the company of many nieces and nephews who visited their farm home. Claretta suddenly passed away in 1948. Donald married again at a later date, a lady named Betty, but this biographer has little information regarding this and will add such information when it becomes available. On February 12, 1987, Donald suffered a fatal heart attack while enroute home from a trip to Mankato. Burial was in Balch Cemetery near Formoso.
