Crescent City - Miss Florence Adkins for many years of her earlier life a resident of this city, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. D. N. Gautier, in Georgia, at an early hour last Thursday morning, the 20th inst. Her body was brought here for interment and arrived on Friday. The funeral service was held at the Presbyterian church and was conducted by Rev. L. S. Hendrix of the Methodist church. The interment was in Eden cemetery. Miss Adkins was a niece of the last Dr. Harrison one of the pioneer settlers of Crescent City, and until his death was a member of his household. She inherited the doctor's old home, the house now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Gutteridge, which she has since maintained. Miss Adkins was a faithful member of the Presbyterian church and during her life time was active in church work. Since living in Georgia she has been matron in charge of the Georgia Baptist Orphanage, near Atlanta, and was most successful in this work. She has been ill nearly a year, a large part of which time she was cared for in an Atlanta hospital. Some three months ago she went to live with her sister, Mrs. Gautier, where she was kindly cared for until the end came. All old Crescent City people will have a kindly recollection of Miss Adkins, and now that she is dead, will drop a tear for her memory. She was a kindly Christian spirit who remained faithful to the end. (Palatka Daily News and Advertiser, Friday, 28 Aug 1914.)
