He was married 1st to Melvina Rawlings (1825-1860) in 1823. He was married 2nd to Mary Francis Sorin (1838-1904) in 1861.

He served in the Civil War as Chaplain for the 3rd Minnesota Volunteer Regiment. After being captured by Nathan Bedford Forrest, the famous Confederate General, he translated the biography of Napoleon from French into English.

He received a Doctor of Divinity degree from the University of Indiana in 1865. During his life, he was a lawyer, a Methodist Minister, and a College President.
