James Jones was the son of Francis Jones (1714-1774) and his second wife Elizabeth Huckabee. He married abt. 1791 in Effingham Co., GA. to Elizabeth Mills, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Mills. He named nine children in his will dated Jan. 24, 1824 (will BK. B, pg. 159-161), and probated Sept. 1, 1825. Their children: Francis b. Jan. 27, 1792,m. Rachel Inman Spain; Lavinia b. Jul. 9, 1794 m. James Young (moved to Thomas Co., GA)Matthew b. Oct. 11, 1795 m. Elizabeth Inman; Berry b. Sep 10, 1799, m.1st. Sophrona "Sophia" Inman 5 Jan. 1832, m.2nd. Rebecca Perrill Cooper 1846; Thomas b. 14 May 1802, m. Lavinia Young (moved to Thomas Co., GA); Mitchell b. Sep 27, 1805, m. Eliza Price; Lyman b. 4 Feb. 1808, d. 12 Jan. 1823; Elizabeth b. 20 Apr 1813, m.1st. Joseph S. Neeley, m.2nd. Thomas Winn; Harriet b. 21 Mar. 1817, m. James B. Blackshear. After his death, his widow and their children moved to South Georgia and settled in Lowndes and Thomas Counties. His widow died in Thomas County, Feb. 28, 1836, and is buried at the Jones Cemetery at Greenwood Plantation. James Jones served as Pvt.
