Local Correspondence

Valdosta, Ga., April 28th, 1880. Dear Times: On last Saturday, I took my leave of this lively and beautiful town, to visit my old home and neighbors, in the southern part of the county. Driving leisurely along…

The oat crop, though not good, is some better than I expected to find it. I thought, like a great many others, that this crop would be an entire failure, but there are many patches worth harvesting and though the heads will be light they will help out the small piles of corn considerably. I noticed that Mr. William Peterson, one of the most successful farmers near the Ocean Pond, has a small field of long cotton growing from the stalks of last year’s planting. There appears to be a very good stand of this cotton, but where ever a missing place occurs Mr. P has replanted with seed. This is an indication of the mildness of the winter. I predict that he will have the earliest square and blossoms.

Long Pond Items
Our neighborhood was shocked last Wednesday when we heard of the death of “Old Uncle Billie Peterson,” One by one these old veterans cross over the “Jordan of death” and who, oh, who; will fill their places? It will be hard to do. He was a beloved by all who knew him, as a neighbor and friend he had no superior and very few equals, always ready to lend a helping hand to the poor and needy. He leaves a large family of grown children to mourn his loss. We tender them our deepest sympathies in their bereavement.
