Florida Man Killed By Train

By Times Staff Writer

JASPER, Fla. – An elderly Hamilton County man was killed Sunday night when his pickup truck, parked on a Seaboard Coastline railroad track in Suwannee County, was hit by a train.

The Florida Highway Patrol identified the dead man as Paul Basco Tyre, 69, of Rte. 3, Jasper. His body was taken to Harry T. Reid Funeral Home here.

State patrol reports said Tyre’s 1973 Dodge pickup was parked facing west on the track, as if it was set to coast down the rails.

A westbound train rounded a curve and smashed into the rear of the pickup about 11:45 p.m., sending it flying off the track.

The train’s engineer, John Huey Stalvey of Callahan, Fla., was not injured in the accident.

A state trooper said this morning it was undetermined why Tyre’s car had been parked on the track. Investigation into the accident is continuing by the Florida Highway Patrol, reports said.

The pickup motor was off but the lights were on at the time of the collision, reports said.

Tyre died of a massive head injuries received in the accident, reports said. He was taken by ambulance to the funeral home, where the autopsy was performed.

Damage to the pickup was set at $1,500, while the train received about $200 damage.

No charges were filed against Stalvey or Seaboard Coastline.
