John Rufus was born in Canada, January 15, 1827 and immigrated to the United States when a smalI boy, with his parents Nathaniel Stoddard and Jane McMann Stoddard. His father died leaving his wife with four boys to rear. The mother and sons started for Utah but when they got to Council Bluffs, John Rufus joined the Battalion and was mustered into Company "B," July 16, 1846 at the age of 19 years. He stayed in California a year after he was released from service; came to Utah shortly after, but returned to San Bernardino for about three years, after which time he and his family returned to Santa Clara, Utah. He helped build and operate the first sawmill in Wayne County.
John Rufus Stoddard died in Vernal, Utah while on a visit to his eldest daughter's home. — Lois Stoddard Curfew
