W. H. Baker, 82, died on January 1, 1977 at Share Medical Center. He was born on July 5, 1894 in Phillipsburg, Kansas, the son of Ida and William Henry Baker. He came to southwest of Freedom with his parents in a covered wagon in the fall of 1903 where his father homesteaded. On July 12, 1916, he was married to Jean Cordia Guthrie. She died on December 29, 1965. Following their marriage, they lived in the Freedom area. On October 13, 1942, he enlisted in the Army during World War II. After his discharge, they moved to Bellflower, California. He returned to Freedom in 1966. Mr. Baker was a member of Hatch-Vincent American Legion Post. Also preceding him in death were his parents; and two sons, Jack Baker on April 21, 1966 and Linwood Baker on April 23, 1970. Survivors include his son, James Baker of Bellflower, California; a sister, Erma Webster of Wichita, Kansas; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Freedom Christian Church with Rev. Bill Briley officiating. Interment will be in Freedom Cemetery under the direction of Wharton Funeral Chapel.
