Son of Richard B Forbes (abt 1813-?) and Mary A Mash (abt 1820-?), both born in Georgia but relocated to Wakulla County before 1850 with their family.

Husband of Nannie Thompson Coker (1849-1914), whom he is buried beside in Crawfordville Cemetery.

Richard enlisted in Capt. Tuberville's Florida Reserve Regiment during the Civil War at the age of 17. According to his pension application records he enlisted in April 1864 and was ordered to guard prisoners at Tallahassee and Madison, Florida. Then he was sent to Marianna and to Natural Bridge but was too late to see any action. He was on guard detail at Iron Bridge on the Ochlockonee River when news of the surrender came. He mustered out as a Pvt Co E, 1st Fla Res, Confederate States Army in May 1865.
