Funeral Rites are Held For Emma W. Ames

Funeral services were held in the Etna Ward Chapel, Monday, February 15 for Emma Wolfley Ames, 68, long time resident of Etna and an early valley pioneer, who died February 10 in Evanston, Wyoming following an lingering illness.
The services were under the direction of Dean Humpherys.member of the Etna Ward bishopric, with prelude and postlude music by Mrs Wilford Clark.
A vocal duet "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere", was presented by Waiter Brower and Mrs Alta Sanderson followed by the invocation given by W.F. Burton
The life history of Mrs Ames was presented by a nephew, Clyde Wolfley and a poem was given by a niece, Rosalie Robinson.
Speakers for the service were Carl Robinson, Lorin H. Roberts, and W.A. Clark, Eldon Hyde presented a violin solo of "Oh My Father", and Mrs Wilford Clark sang "Goin Home" Closing remarks were presented by Dean Humpherys, followed by the benediction by J. Tol Chapman.
Dedication of the grave was by Ardell Ames and interment was in the Amesville cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Schwab Mortuary and the Etna Ward Relief Society was in charge of the flowers.
Pallbearers were Leorin Ames, John L. Ames, Ralph Ames, Fred Ames, Wayne Ames and Arthur Dabel.
Emma Wolfley was born September 24 1885 in Murray Utah and at the age of four migrated with her parents, Mr and Mrs Frederick Wolfley Sr. to lower Star Valley. The family arrived in Star Valley by sleigh from Montpelier through Crow creek Canyon early in the spring of 1890 and was one of the first five families to settle in the vicinity presently known as Etna. The family was located in a log cabin on the present Wolfley ranch near Etna.
Mrs Ames early schooling was in a one room log school followed by later schooling in the Old Glen schoolhouse . In order to attend school, she crossed the Salt River on horseback through winter ice floes and spring floods. Formal education ceased with the eighth grade.
Emma Wolfley was married to John C. Ames by Bishop Aaron T. Bracken in Freedom Wyoming in August 1902 and the Ames were later remarried in the Logan Temple.
Four sons and a daughter were born to the Ames including Leorin W., John L, Annie Winona, Ralph W. and Wayne B. In addition to their own family, the Ames accepted many unfortunate children into their family circle.
Emma Wolfley Ames was preceded in death by her daughter Annie in 1942 and her husband in 1945. she spent most of her remaining life in Utah with her youngest son Wayne.
Survivors include four children, fourteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Mrs Ames was also a faithful church goer and served a total of 14 years in the Relief Society presidency and in other auxiliaries in the Etna ward.
Attending the funeral from out of the valley were Leorin Ames, Emogene Poulson and Mrs Troy Ray of Salt Lake City, John L Ames of LaMesa Calif. Ralph W. Ames of Logan Utah; Wayne B. Ames, San Angelo Texas; Mrs Joyce Tornaton and daughter of Idaho Falls; Mr and Mrs Parley Ames and Ann Findlay of Orem Utah; Mr and Mrs Leon Livingston of Ogden, Utah; Mr and Mrs Arnold Ames and family of Soda Springs Idaho; Clark Gray of Preston, Idaho; Hattie Jensen of Fish Haven, Idaho; Theron Smith Jr. and Lettie Smith of Cleveland Idaho and Mr and Mrs Lester Bagley of Cheyenne Wyoming.
