Woodstock- A man drowned when his car plunged through ice on Black Pond about 10 p.m. last night and sank in about 12 feet of water. A passenger managed to escape before the car sank.

The body of Thomas Salo, 17, of Route 197, was recovered by divers about two hours after the accident and taken to Day Kimball Hospital where attempts to revive him were made. He was pronounced dead shortly before 3 a.m. by medical examiner Dr. Bruce Valentine, according to a hospital official.

Police could not explain why the Salo drove onto the ice.

The passenger, identified as Alan Racine, 20, of child Road managed to escape as the car began to settle through the cracking ice. Racine told police that he saw Salo trying to squeeze through the drivers window as the car was sinking.

Racine was treated at the hospital for shock and exposure, the released.

Rescue units from Woodstock, Tolland and Eagleville Fire Departments were at the scene.

Black Pond is in the northwest corner of town, within the triangle formed by Routes 197 and 198, near the Union town line. The car was still at the bottom of the pond late this morning.

Investigating for Troop D were Sgt. James Stuyniski and Trooper John Hardell. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. A native of Woodstock, Salo had been employed at Hyde Manufacturing Company in Southbridge as a Metallurgist, according to a relative.

He leaves his parents, four brothers, and a sister.
