David Robert "Bobby" Abel, Jr., 82, of West Helena passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2009 in West Helena. Mr. Abel was born July 25, 1926 in Hughes, Arkansas to the late David Robert Abel, Sr. and the late Mildred Ferguson Abel. He graduated from Helena High School in 1944 and served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He was stationed at Okinawa. Mr. Abel was also a Mason and a member of the VFW. A long time mechanic, he was the owner of Abel's Garage. On February 14, 1947, he married Earlene Cantrell.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Earlene Cantrell Abel of West Helena; a son, Robert Abel and wife, Cynthia, of Jonesboro, Arkansas; a daughter, Ann Gassaway and husband, Bobby, of Robinsonville, Mississippi; three grandchildren, Rachel Abel, David Abel and wife, Crystal, and Shelby Abel, all of Jonesboro, Arkansas; two great-grandchildren, John Michael Jenkins and Amber Jenkins, both of Jonesboro; two sisters, Rose Abel Harris of Durango, Colorado and Betty Lou Abel Gregory of Concord, Arkansas; several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a great-granddaughter, Alexis Renee Abel.
Graveside services for Bobby Abel will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, March 6, 2009 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Helena. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Roller-Citizens. Reverend Richard Rogers will officiate.
Pallbearers are Leonard Gregory, David Abel, Steven Strayer, Jeremy Dill, Dennis Johnston and Charles Johnston.
