William M Williams, 87, better known to the citizens of Whitesburg and Letcher County as "Uncle Bill", died at his home in Whitesburg Wednesday noon after an illness of several months.

"Uncle Bill" was a familiar figure to all the citizens of Whitesburg who will miss him greatly. For the last 18 years, he has carried the mail from the depot to the post office in good and bad weather until about six months ago when his health began failing.

He was one of the charter members of Eagle Council No 12 Jr OUAM of Whitesburg, as well as a lifetime member. He hardly ever missed a meeting of this organization and was one of the most regular members in attendance.

"Uncle Bill" came to Letcher County 45 years ago from Virginia and has lived here ever since. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Hawkins Williams, six sons, Henry and Joseph of Akron, Ohio, Willie of Greenport, Long Island, New York, Albert of Dayton, Ohio and Woodrow and Claude of Whitesburg; and six daughters, Rebecca and Ethel of Indianapolis, Lucinda, Laura, Edna and Marie of Whitesburg.

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church of Whitesburg by Reverends L O Griffith, O V Caudill and Joe Fairchild Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock and were attended by a large crowd of his friends and lodge brothers.

Pallbearers: Dr Boaz Adkins, Robert Blair, John Taulbee, N M Webb, S J Cornett, S C Blair, L D Collins & Ishmael Combs.

Interment took place in the Caudill Cemetery on Sandlick and was in charge of Eagle Council No 12 Jr OUAM. The Burke Funeral Home had charge of the funeral arrangements.
