Daughter of James Lewis McCall & Savana May Stuart.

Bessie had an older brother Charles Alvin an older sister Gertrude, and a younger brother James Robert. Bessie was 5 years old when her mother became ill and died. Bessie and her younger brother Jim lived with her mother's sister Delilah Pearl, widower Albert J. Sell and his wife Anna. After they were older they lived with their father.

Bessie met Albert James Petty in Wilson County, Kansas. Albert moved to Campo, Baca, Colorado and Bessie follow, they were married May 23, 1920 Bert was 35 years old and Bessie was 25. They started their family the following year with the birth of their son James Robert. Then came Velma May, George Lynn and Dale McCall. Bert built many houses in the Baca and Mesa counties. Bessie father came to live with them in March 1928.

In April 1929 Bert bought a new Model A Ford and the family moved to Los Angeles, California. On June 5th they settled in Lincoln, California. Built a 24X24 house, the same floor plan as those built in Colorado except this one had a bathroom connected to the back of the house. Bert's sisters Mary, Lizzie and Clara were living in Lincoln. The family joined the Lincoln Pentecostal Church in 1930.

Bessie had a baby girl on December 12, 1929 she was stillborn. They took the baby and would not let her hold her. Later in life she told my other Grandmother the first thing when she got to heaven she was going to hold her baby. Rex Albert, my father was born November 23, 1933.

March 6, 1936 Bessie lost her daughter Velma May with spinal meningitis, during the same time George was in the hospital with appendicitis. In 1941 Bessie lost her father.

In the late 40's the family moved to Ceres, California. Bert built his home at 610 Wade Street in Modesto, California. He also built rental on the street, the street was only one block long. This is where they were living when I showed up in November 1952. My Granny was like the storybook grandmother who baked went to church on Sunday and had the family dinners. I still miss and try to copy her.

In the early 50's their first Grandson Douglas was born. His proud parents were George and Ruth. Dougie was born in Eastern USA and Bessie and Bert never got meet him. Dougie died around the age of 3.

Bert and Bessie had 3 grandsons and 6 granddaughters.

May 6th 1960 Bessie lost her husband Bert. He had a heart attack while visiting their son Dale and his family in Van Nuys, California. The following April she lost her youngest son, Rex my father. After that I would hear my grandmother prayer to go home to be with her family.

Granny sold her home to her oldest son Bob and his family and moved next door into one of the rentals. On May 16th 1966 the police came to notify Bob that his family had just been killed in a car/train accident. He was not home so they went next door, when they told Granny they had no idea she was the Grandmother.

Bob helped Granny for the rest of her life he was a good son. She lived to be 98 years old. The word was God was just showing her who boss was she could go home when he was ready, not because she demanded it. When Granny pass away my thought were she is holding her baby.
