Perhaps born in General Militia District #773 (Upper Town District) in Muscogee County, where his parents appear on the 1900 census. Son of Samuel J. "Sam" NEWSOM, Mem. # 34287693, and Minnie Lee (HUGULEY) NEWSOM, Mem. # 34287721 , who married ca. 1904 (Minnie had borne four children by 1900, only one of whom, a daughter named Murrell, was still living). Samuel Jr. died aged ten months in the wee hours of February 21, 1906, at the family residence, 104 Twentieth Street in Columbus, after an illness of two weeks of pneumonia. The funeral was conducted from the residence the same afternoon, officiated by Rev. J. W. HOWARD, with interment in Linwood Cemetery [ref. Columbus (GA) Ledger newspaper, 21 FEB 1906, p. 3, & 22 FEB 1906, p. 2].
