Leoma (LaMier) Fulton was born March 30, 1912 in Seaton, Illinois, the first child of Joseph Paul LaMier and Margaret (Kepler) LaMier. The family soon moved to Farmington, Iowa and then to nearby Keosauqua where Leoma entered grade school and later became a graduate of the Keosauqua High School Class of 1930. After finishing high school, she obtained a teaching certificate and began teaching in a small one room rural school near Farmington.

Leoma married James Immel Fulton on May 30, 1936. This brought an end to her teaching career because women teachers were not permitted to be married in those days.

The couple made their first home in Fairfield, Iowa and in 1937 became parents of their first child. In 1940, they moved to Aurora, Illinois where in 1941 and 1943 two more children were born. James worked in a defense plant during World War II, but when the war ended in 1945 the job ended and the couple decided to relocate their young family to northern Kansas where James had a sister living. They eventually made a new home in Concordia.

During the years in Concordia, Leoma became a member of the First Methodist Church. She also obtained work in a local medical clinic and as a saleslady with Montgomery Ward. Circumstances were such, however, that in 1956 the couple decided to return to Iowa where James had an opportunity to go into business for himself. Leoma then began working for Sears Roebuck in Des Moines where she remained employed until she retired in 1977.

After retiring, Leoma and James moved to a new rural home near Lake Thunderbird several miles east of Norman, Oklahoma. The couple spent several years of very happy retirement here, but James suddenly passed away in 1990 and Leoma shortly afterward decided to move to an apartment in Oklahoma City. A few years later she went to live in Las Vegas, Nevada where her eldest son and his wife were living in retirement and where she spent three years enjoying the excitement of that city. Eventually however, she decided to leave Las Vegas and soon was in her final home in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, near her two younger sons and their wives.

Leoma's health began to seriously fail during 2009 and late in the year she had to move into a nursing home. She passed away from heart failure at the age of 97 on February 16, 2010 in Alma, Arkansas. Her cremated remains were buried in Norman, Oklahoma beside the grave of her husband James.

Leoma is survived by her three sons; Lyle and wife Elaine Fulton, Charles Fulton, Duane and wife Carol Fulton; her sister Alice Anderson; her brother Joseph LaMier; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Note: Leoma Fulton was the mother of contributor Lyle Fulton.
