Thelma Mae Hylton, Mtn. Grove, passed away Sunday evening, June 2, at 7:55 p.m. at St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield, Missouri, following a lengthy illness. She was born on April 10, 1931 in Norwood, Missouri to Willie and Vera Rowland.
Thelma grew up in the Norwood area, and married Joe Hylton on January 5, 1950 at Dunn, Missouri. Two sons were born to this union.
She and Joe have been residents of Mtn. Grove for fifty years. She was a well-known business and community leader. For twenty-one years, she and Joe operated Hylton Hardware in Mtn. Grove.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mtn. Grove since 1951, and served in many roles of leadership in the church. One of her areas of service, after studying sign language, was to sign services for the deaf in the First Baptist Church. Her faith and her relationship to Christ was an integral part of her life. During her long hospitalization, she actively shared her faith. With patience, optimism, and with a ready smile, she exhibited strength and hope to all who visited her. For twenty-five years, she and Joe led Lay Renewal Weekends in churches across America.
Her father, Willie Rowland of Norwood, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Hylton; two sons, Lloyd Hylton and Lonnie Hylton and wife Barbara; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her mother, Vera Rowland; one brother, Vernon Rowland and wife Dottie; other relatives and friends who will sadly miss her.
