James W. O'Neill
Funeral services for James W. O'Neill, 97, were held at 10:30 a. m. Friday, July 14, at Lindsey Memorial Presbyterian Church, Martin. He died early Monday morning, July 10 at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Judy O'Neill, Harrington. Pastor Kate Bottorff officiated.
James Washington O'Neill was born June 3, 1898 to John and Blanche (Gealy) O'Neill on his grandfather, James B. O'Neill's place in a sod house on Wounded Knee Creek north of Gordon, NE.
At a very early age he moved with his parents and sister, Sylvia, to Burton, NE, where his father homesteaded. A few years later, John sold the homestead and moved his family into Burton where James mother, Blanche, ran a boarding house and his father, John, ran a livery barn, barber shop and mail route between Bassett, Roxburg and Burton. James often rode horseback to deliver mail for his father. While they lived in Burton, three sisters and a brother were born.
James received his primary education in Burton. When he was 16, he saved a fellow swimmer from drowning. Senator Horton asked him if he would rather received a medal or go to school. He chose going to school and stayed with Senator and mrs. Horton for a year while attending school in Lincoln, NE. On weekends he sep up bowling pins to make spending money.
James moved by covered wagon to the Harrington Community in Todd County in 1917 with his parents, four sisters, and one brother.
James bought land in western Todd County in 1921. He plowed with eight head of horses and built a one-room house. During the winter months he worked for Horace G. Wallingfor on a ranch south of Nenzel, NE to earn money to buy seed to plant his crops in the spring. This is where he met his future wife, Mildred, a daughter of H. G. Wallingford.
James and Mildred were married July 5, 1925, in Hot Springs, SD. To this union two sons were born, Jimmie H. and Dean. They continued to live on the farm in western Todd County until 1969 when they bought a home in Martin. After buying their house in Martin they still spent much of their time in the country.
James was instrumental in getting electricity from Rural Electric Association in the Harrington area in the early 1950's and served as a board member for 23 yeaars, from 1949 to 1972. He also helped build the Presbyterian Church east of Vetal in 1925 and was an active membr all of his life. James was an elder of the church and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
James died July 10, 1995 on the home ranch which is now operated by his son, Dean.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmie and Martha O'Neill and Dean and Judy O'Neill; eight grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren; two sisters, mabel Engelen, and Alyce Engelen; and one brother, Clarence O'Neill of Martin.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, in 1980 after 55 years of marriage, his parents, John and Blanche O'Neill; and two sister, Sylvia Lawler and Otis Finch.
Burial was at Martin Community Cemetery under the direction of Ziegler Funeral Home.
