During Operation STARLITE in, Binh Son District, Quang Ngai Province while engaged in action against enemy forces LCpl Barton was wounded on August 20 and died of multiple fragmentation wounds to his left arm and partial amputation of his right leg after being evacuated to the LPH-2 Iwo Jima as a result of an errant US Naval Gunfire Round fired in support of the Marine ground units.

Services for Marine Corps Lance Corporal Virgil W. Barton, 20 who died Aug. 21 in Cu Lai, South Viet Nam, will be at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday in Johnson-Saum & Knoble Chapel. BuriaL will be in Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery.
Barton a native of Wisconsin, lived here 19 years. He attended Marston Junior High School and Hoover High. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in May 1962.
He is survived by his father, Virgil S. Barton of San Diego; his mother, Mrs. Elenora Stone of San Diego; two sisters, Mrs. Anna May Rydel and Katy Barton, both of San Diego; his maternal grandfather, Clarence Sanborn of San Diego, and two half brohers."
