Author. Her real name was Hilda Caroline Gregg. She was educated at home and at a private school, later receiving and honorary degree from London University. She began her working life as a teacher, and began writing in 1881. She published her first novel, "In Furthest India" in 1894, and wrote approximately one book each year until her last, "A Brother of Girls", in 1925. Her novels were mostly romantic adventure stories featuring English heroes and heroines in exotic locations. Her most popular books were those featuring Viscount Usk, ruler of the fictional Balkan kingdom of Thracia. These included "An Uncrowned King" (1896), "A Crowned Queen" (1898) and "The Prince of Captivity" (1902). She spent the last years of her life caring for her sick mother in Eastbourne, Kent.
