OBITUARY:

James Louis Akers

James Louis Akers, 75, Mattoon, Ill., and formerly of Terre Haute, died at 8:15 a.m. Monday in his residence. He was a former coal miner and 12-year employee for the Terre Haute Street Department. He was born July 7, 1910, in Sullivan to Hud and Ruth Akers*. Survivors include three daughters, Gladys Marie Akers, Terre Haute, Shirley Brotchner, Hammond, and Goldie Akers, Texas; two sons, Jimmie Akers, Hammond, and Frank E. Shepherd, Mattoon; one stepson, Kenneth Duane Shepherd, Ashmore; and six grandchildren. He was a member of Terre Haute Pentecostal Church. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday in Mitchell-Jordan Funeral Home, Mattoon, with the Rev. William Stark officiating. Burial is in Dodge Grove Cemetery, Mattoon. Visitation is noon to 2 p.m. Friday.

*NOTE: James was raised by his stepmother. His biological mother was Estella May "Stella" (Inman) Lemons Dix Akers.
