Again the Angel of Death has entered our portals and summoned a dear sister to the beautiful home beyond.
Sister Carrie L. Burleigh was the thirty-ninth President of our Assembly, presiding over the session held in Huron in 1929.
She was born in Melbourne, Ontario, Canada, on July 24, 1866, and passed away at Estelline, South Dakota, on March 19, 1961.
She was married to Dr. George H. Burleigh in Toronto, Canada. They had one daughter, Ruby Burleigh Simonson, with whom Sister Burleigh had made her home for several years. Dr. Burleigh died April 30, 1917.
LODGE RECORD
On May 2, 1908 Carrie Burleigh was initiated into Esther Rebekah Lodge No. 11 of Woonsocket. She took a Withdrawal Card from this Lodge and was admitted as a Charter Member of Hamlin Rebekah Lodge No. 117 of Estelline on January 21, 1910. She was the first Noble Grand in July, 1910.
She served her Lodge in many capacities. The Decoration of Chivalry was conferred upon her in 1920.
Hamlin Rebekah Lodge was affiliated with District No. 10. Sister Burleigh represented her Lodge as representative at the District Meeting held in Brookings in 1910. She was the first District President and served in that office for three years. She also served as Secretary-Treasurer for almost ten years.
ASSEMBLY RECORD
On May 7, 1910 Sister Burleigh, as the first Noble Grand of Hamlin Rebekah Lodge, appeared at the twenty-first session of the Rebekah Assembly, as Representative for one year.
She again represented her Lodge as the sessions held in Sioux Falls in 1911, Aberdeen in 1912, Pierre in 1918, Watertown in 1920, Aberdeen in 1921, and Madison in 1922. Here she received her first appointment in the Assembly, Outside Guardian, from Sister Hattie O. Brown, the newly installed President.
She Served in appointive offices of Inside Guardian in 1923. Chaplain in 1924 and Conductor in 1925.
In 1926 she was elected Warden at Hot Springs and installed into her office by Sister Mary Burnett, the retiring President. In 1926 she was elected Vice President and became our President in 1928. She presided over the session held in Huron in 1929.
During her term of office Murdo Rebekah Lodge No 201 was instituted at Murdo on June 11, 1929.
The Grand Master during her term was Mr. A. H. Neil of Lead, South Dakota.
She attended only two sessions of the Assembly after the expiration of her term as President -- at Mitchell in 1930, and at Aberdeen in 1931.

Lady Burleigh was mustered into the Ladies' Auxiliary, Patriarchs Militant of Canton No. 11 at Huron on July 13, 1922.

Funeral services were held from the Congregational Church at Estelline on March 22, 1961. She was laid to rest in Hillcrest Cemetery.
That fitting tribute be paid to her memory all Rebekah Lodges are requested to read this Memorial at the first regular meeting following its receipt, and to drape their Charters.
