Captain Carol A. Adsit USN (Ret), 74, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at her residence. Carol was born on April 4, 1934, in New York, the only daughter of Carl Clark and Alice (Patch) Adsit. She graduated in 1952 from Northfield Mount Herman School in Northfield, Mass., and in 1955 from Colorado State University. In 1965, Carol graduated from the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School with a master of Science degree in Computer Systems Management. Carol was commissioned in 1956 in the U.S. Navy and served 25 years, retiring in 1981 as Commanding Officer of NARDAC Naval Air Station, San Diego, Calif. During her military career, Capt. Adsit was awarded the National Defense Service Medal; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Vietnamese Navy Staff Service Medal 1st Class; Navy Commendation Medal; Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon; Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars; Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross) metal color with palm and the Command Ashore Insignia. Following her retirement, Carol relocated to Portland. She was a member of the Woodford's Congregational Church and was very active in the choir. Her love of singing also kept her busy with the Great Waters Music Festival, Longfellow Chorus, Berkshire Choral Festival, Women in Harmony and the Choral Art Society. Carol enjoyed traveling, most recently to Austria and Hungary with the Berkshire Choral Festival. Carol was predeceased by her parents; uncle Paul F. Adsit and aunt Elizabeth (Woltz) Adsit, uncle Arthur Adsit and aunt Marjorie Adsit; and first cousin Sallie Adsit Anderson. She is survived by first cousin Paula Adsit Anderson and husband J. William of Cincinnati, Ohio, Lowell E. 'Duke' Anderson and wife Mary Jane of Caldwell, Ohio, cousin Kelly Anderson Samolitis and husband Timothy; daughters Sallie and Kimberly of Vienna, W.Va.; cousin Paul F. Anderson and wife Nancy, cousin David J. Anderson and wife Karen; daughter Susan; cousin Mark W. Anderson all of Cincinnati, Ohio, cousin Chuck Adsit and wife Rita; and son Alex of San Leandro, Calif. Carol is also survived by many dear friends and her beloved pets, Amanda and Kendall. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service with a special tribute from Woodford's Church Choir on Feb. 14, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Woodfords Congregational Church, 202 Woodford St., Portland, with the Rev. Carolyn Lambert officiating. Internment with full military honors will be he held at a future date at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., in accordance with Carol's wishes. Arrangements are under the direction of Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland.
