OBITUARY - OROVILLE MERCURY, Wednesday, February 18, 1903:
"J. B. Keifer Died Today. J. B. Keifer, whose serious illness was noted several days ago, died at an early hour this morning. The immediate cause of his death was pneumonia, but this was the culmination of a series of troubles that have followed an accident, in which he had a leg badly crushed over a year ago. He has not been well since this injury and for some days past his life was despaired of.
Deceased was about 47 years of age, and had lived at Thermalito for several years. His wife died a few years ago and the seven children were scattered, an infant babe going to the wife's parents in the East, two remaining with the father at Thermalito, others going to relatives and friends and to the orphan asylum [sic] at Vallejo.
He was the oldest of a family of four. Wm Keifer and J. B. Keifer of Oroville are brothers and Miss Belle Keifer, formerly of Oroville, is a sister of deceased. Among those who were here were his father, the two brothers, two sons who reside at Thermalito and Miss Mamie, a daughter who resides at Berkeley. Miss Belle Keifer, the sister, and Miss Anna Keifer, a daughter of deceased, will arrive from Oakland tonight."
-----------------------------------
Byers' brother, John McCarl Keifer, was the executor of his estate.

From Hartford Keifer: Byer's family of seven children were orphaned at an early age, and the seven were distributed around the family. My mother and father kept a daughter, Julia, before I was born. A daughter of the oldest, William, now lives in Sacramento with her children, having recently been widowed. This is Kathryn, or "Fritzi". At the present, I am not informed about the status of the rest of that section of the family.

Elizabeth Romer died in child birth with Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Keifer in 1897.
Jacob kept William.
In the 1900 census only William appears with Jacob.
William was married in 1910 to Hazel Bullard.
Julia went to Jacob's brother John and wife Libby for a short while, but they were strict and considered her wild, so she was passed to someone else. She was married in 1905 to Louis Bauer Jr.
Henry Romer, Edward, and Caroline (Nannie) went to the Good Templars' Orphans' Home in Vallejo in 1898 after their mother died. Byers later pulled them out of the orphanage, but in 1903 when he died, Edward was sent back to the Good Templars' Orphans' Home.
Betty went to live with Elizabeth Roemer's parents after she was born.
Mamie (also named Mary Elizabeth) was a student at Berkeley and stayed with a physics teacher's family. She married Elmer Foster in 1908.
Henry Romer married Vonnie Hilton around 1920.
Ed spent time in the military and might have married a lady named Ruth.
Caroline Nancy b. about 1890 Thermalito whereabouts are unknown after the 1898 orphanage.
