He enjoyed a long career as Teacher, Principal and Administrator with School District 11 in Colorado Springs from 1950 through 1980 and his other career as a professional musician.
Philip was born and raised in Mariemont, a suburb of Cincinnati Ohio, son of Merrill Brown and Helen Louise Winter VanPelt. He served as a combat infantryman in the 20th Armored Division of the U. S. Army from 1943 thru 1945.
He received a BA and began teaching in Whittier Elementary School in 1950 and in the same year married Louanne Clark, his wife of 58 years.
Some may remember him as Teacher at Whittier, Steele, and Lincoln Elementary Schools; as Assistant Principal at Lincoln Elementary School, and Principal at Buena Vista, Pike, Grant, and Howbert Elementary Schools.
He also earned Master and Doctoral Degrees from The University of Cincinnati during his School District #11 career. He was a very talented musician especially as a leader and Trumpet Player.
Some will remember dancing to The Naturals Dance Band for several years at old Hiawatha Gardens or as Lead Trumpet for the Original McRoberts Gutbucket Seven Dixieland Jazz group, still others may remember attending those very popular bi-weekly jam sessions, concerts in the parks, and private party occasions in Colorado Springs for the period of 1950 through 1980.
Philip is survived by his wife Louanne, and three grown children, Todd, Martha, and David, and several grandchildren. He will live in our hearts and minds forever.
No service is planned beyond an Inurnment from Memorial Gardens. Those who would like to express remembrance are asked to contribute to a favorite charitable cause.
